TOURING BURMA CAMP
By : PHEONA SEIWAA APPAH
Burma Camp is a military camp in Accra - Ghana located along the 37 to Labadi road. It is the headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghanaian Ministry of Defence. It retains notoriety and fear from previous Ghanaian military regimes, which civilians who entered the camp might not remerge. It was also the sight of fighting during the June 1979 Coup that placed Jerry John Rawlings in power.
The camp is a work place and at the same time a living place for the military personnels which makes the camp a town on its own. It consists of schools, churches, various bus stops, homes, work places and recreational centres. Even though it is known as a military camp, it can be a very comfortable and secured place to live. The Supply bus stop which leads to the Armed Forces School and other areas around it, the Airforce bus stop which leads to the residence of the Airforce personnels, the Major Mahama bus stop leading to the Battalion Soldiers' residence and the market bus stop which leads to a mini market in the camp are few among landmarks in the camp.
Burma camp also serves as a tourist site where people travel to see and learn about the Airforce Base and other relevant places in the camp.
It is one of the places that most people find difficult to visit because of the assumptions that the soldiers are strict and can be violent sometimes but will be best to visit and see the good things in Burma Camp and Ghana as a whole.
